Abstract

It is customary to consider that the history of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) begins with the publication of Frank’s paper on premenstrual tension in 1931, and the publication on progesterone treatment of PMS by Greene and Dalton in 1953. These papers imply that PMS is a disease caused by an excess of estrogen or a deficiency of progesterone.
