Zusammenfassung
Die Einführung der Intubation in die Anästhesietechnik war vermutlich der wichtigste Fortschritt für die Narkose. Erst die Intubation schuf die Voraussetzung für eine Vielzahl heute durchgeführter operativer Eingriffe, sie wurde dabei für den Kranken der wesentlichste Beitrag für seine Sicherheit, nicht zuletzt durch die Ermöglichung besonderer Narkoseverfahren mit minimaler Belastung für den Patienten. Vor allem durch die Intubation sind Komplikationen der Narkose so selten, daß ein großer Anteil an der verbleibenden Narkosemorbidität und -mortalität durch die Intubation selbst hervorgerufen wird. Damit kommt der Verminderung intubationsbedingter Risiken ein besonders hoher Stellenwert zu. Insbesondere geht es darum, Schäden zu vermeiden, die

aus einem lokalen Trauma,

aus reflektorischen Reaktionen des Herz-Kreislauf-Systems oder
-
einer Hypoxie — meist als Folge einer schwierigen Intubation — entstehen.
