Infections and Inflammations

Abstract

Diseases of the brain and its coverings caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites are usually diagnosed on the basis of the patient’s history, symptoms and signs, and laboratory data. Nonetheless, noninvasive radiologic procedures such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging play an important role in recognizing certain disease processes and monitoring treatment results. This is especially true with respect to cerebral parenchymal involvement but also if complications of meningeal or ependymal disease have led to space-occupying lesions or hydrocephalus. While imaging tests are often nonspecific, revealing abnormalities indistinguishable from those occurring in other disease categories, specific findings may be seen in some instances.
