Abstract
Interest in the pleiotropic action of IFNs has focussed on their antiviral, antimitogenic and immunomodulatory activities [45, 47]. As IFNs express activity against several human malignancys, new possibilities for managing patients with cancer have been suggested and are under investigation [11, 20, 35, 36, 44]. Evidence was given that type I (leukocyte and fibroblast) and type II (γ) IFNs operate through independent receptor sites [5, 50] and induce alterations in cell membranes and in the cytoskelton [41, 33]. IFN-γ has been found in various systems to display greater antiproliferative effects and inhibition of CFU-GM than either IFN-α or IFN-β [4, 6, 12, 29].
