The Ground State of the Helium Atom by the Hylleraas Method

Abstract

In Chaps. 13 and 15 we have seen that the Schrödinger equation can be solved relatively simply for the motion of a particle in the spherically symmetric potential V(r). The Schrödinger equation for the relative motion of two particles, which interact with each other by a spherically symmetric potential, can be reduced to this case. It is more difficult when the potential is no longer spherically symmetric or when three particles mutually interact.
