Zusammenfassung
Die pauschale Frage nach der Wirksamkeit psychotherapeutischer Verfahren wird immer seltener gestellt. Demgegenüber tritt zunehmend das Interesse an jenen Mechanismen in den Vordergrund, die in solchen Verfahren Veränderung einleiten, moderieren und aufrechterhalten. Dieser Sachverhalt korrespondiert mit einer Entwicklung des Gegenstandes ‚Psychotherapie‘, die an vielen Stellen — therapeutische Praxis, konzeptuelles Selbstverständnis, wissenschaftliche Interessensschwerpunkte — nachgezeichnet werden kann. Die Ergebnisse von weit mehr als 500 kontrollierten Psychotherapiestudien haben den psychotherapeutischen Verfahren einen Teil des Rechtfertigungsdruckes genommen, der die Szene ausgehend von Eysencks (1952) provokanten Behauptungen in eine produktive Unruhe gestürzt hatte. Seine These, die auf eine Übersicht der damals zugänglichen Forschungs- und Ergebnisberichte zur psychotherapeutischen Effizienz zurückgreift (und die er durch geringfügige Parteilichkeit in der Kennwertbildung vorfabriziert) lautete: Psychotherapie erzeugt keine Effekte, die über die spontane Selbstheilungsrate hinaus gehen. Eysenck bezog dieses Diktum auf nicht-verhaltensmodifizierende Techniken. Er steht damit am Ausgangspunkt eines Vierteljahrhunderts der Legitimitationsforschung, in der es im wesentlichen — und nicht immer mit feinen argumentativen und wissenschaftlichen Mitteln — um den Beleg der Superiorität der jeweils vertretenen therapeutischen Richtung gegangen ist.
