Abstract

Before surgical intervention in a fractured acetabulum can be accepted as a means of treatment, accurate diagnosis based on radiology is essential. As in other conditions, classification aids accurate understanding of these sometimes complex fractures. Recognition of the existence of a fracture does not in general present a great difficulty although a vertical crack in the coronal plane or in the anterior wall of the acetabulum may not be so easy to confirm. Once a fracture is recognised, its anatomico-pathological type should be defined with precision, together with an assessment of displacement of the fracture fragments. It is essentially on this appraisal that the fundamental decision with regard to choice of operative approach will be made.
