Abstract

The Elbe river in northern Germany is considered to be a major contributor to the pollution of the North Sea. Although at its mouth isolated measurements of pollutant concentrations do exist, quantitative data on the pollutant freight are scarce and notoriously unreliable, being based on the fresh water discharge at Neu-Darchau 200 km upstream.
