Abstract

Some notions about particle production in hadron-nucleon and hadron-nucleus collisions are initially recalled, before examining the transition from hadronic matter to a quark-gluon plasma. The essential characteristics of the experiments whose results are discussed in these lectures are outlined. An analysis is made of the main results obtained in the experiments performed at Brookhaven at 14.5 GeV/nucleon and at CERN at 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon in the search for the quark-gluon plasma under the assumptions of different signatures : transverse momentum distribution, direct photon production, the suppression of the J/ψ production, Bose-Einstein interferometry, fluctuations in rapidity and intermittency, and production of strange particles. A conclusion from the experimental situation is drawn.
