From Anoxia to Fish Poisoning: The Last Ten Years of Phytoplankton Blooms in Swedish Marine Waters

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Coastal and Estuarine Studies ((COASTAL,volume 35))

Abstract

Algal blooms in Swedish marine waters are not a new phenomenon. In the low saline waters (4–7 °/oo) of the Baltic Sea blooms of Nodularia spumigena (Cyanophyceae) were documented one hundred years ago (Apstein, 1902). Nodularia has often bloomed since then, but the intensity and size seems to have increased lately, probably in response to eutrophication (Horstmann, 1975). These blooms have been correlated with warm summers with, low precipitation (Edler et al., 1982).
