Abstract

Because of its spectacular optical appearance the interacting galaxy pair NGC 4038/39 has received much attention. Toomre and Toomre (1972) and, more recently, Barnes (1988) modelled a galaxy encounter that produced a system quite like the observed galaxies. Even though extensive observational material exists from the radio to the X-ray domain, the detailed geometry and dynamics of the encounter as well as most of the physical processes induced by the violent interaction have escaped satisfactory selfconsitent explanation so far.

Based on observations collected at ESO, La Silla (Chile)
