Abstract
Pancreas transplants have been performed at the University of Minnesota since 1966 [1]. The results of the first series of 14 transplants, ending in 1973, have been reported in detail [2, 3]. In 1978 pancreas transplants were resumed at the University of Minnesota [4], first in diabetic patients who already had kidney transplants, then in nonuremic non-kidney transplant patients [5–7], and finally in uremic or preuremic recipients of simultaneous kidney transplants [8]. The grafts have been procured from living related and cadaver donors [9]. We have tested a variety of surgical techniques [6, 10] and immunosuppressive regimens [6, 8]. This paper summarizes our overall, initial, and most recent results according to multiple variables.
