Über die ursprüngliche Anwendung als reine Rechenmaschine hinaus bewältigt die elektronische Datenverarbeitung heute ganz andere Problembereiche. Als Beispiele seien die Verwaltung von immensen Datenmengen im Banken- und Versicherungswesen oder die Steuerung und Überwachung von Fertigungsstraßen genannt.
