Generic chemical structures in patents — an evaluation of the Sheffield University research work

Chemical Information

Abstract

The technology for storing and searching large databases of specific chemical substances is well established; public and private systems and services have operated successfully for a decade or more. Attention has now turned to more complex database types — to 3-D chemical structures, to biological macro- molecules, and to generic structures in patents. These all pose formidable problems in terms of the complexity of the data structures, the search algorithms, and the processing power required.

This paper reports on the problems which have been overcome in relation to storing and searching representations of generic structures in patents, and the results of evaluation of the methods.
