Abstract
Termination of transcription by the RNA polymerase of E. coli is generally assumed to be quite limited in the absence of deliberate transcription termination signals. However, the inherent termination rate of RNA polymerase in the absence of deliberate termination signals (what we will refer to as the processivity of RNA polymerase) has not been carefully quantitated. Therefore, it is not known if the inherent processivity of RNA polymerase is an important limitation to transcription, or whether processivity can be increased by post-initiation modifications of RNA polymerase in some operons.
