Abstract

The biochemical pathway leading to the synthesis of thyroid hormones involves two thyroid-specific proteins: thyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase. Thyroglobulin is the biosynthetic precursor of iodothyronines which result from the iodination and coupling of selected tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin (Nunez Pommier, 1982). Thyroperoxidase, in the presence of H2O2 provided by a still to be defined enzymatic system, is the enzyme responsible for both the iodination and the coupling hormonogenic reactions. These two proteins are the main differentiation markers of the thyrocyte and, as such, they have been extensively studied from structural, regulatory and pathological viewpoints.
