Abstract
The aim of our research is to design an instrument which will mimic the human sense of smell. This ambition distinguishes our approach from that used in the related area of gas sensing. In the latter area, the object is usually to detect a single gas or vapour (frequently a toxic material) which has exceeded some predetermined threshold value. We use our sense of smell not only for detecting noxious vapours but also in a much more sophisticated way for classifying and grading smells.
