Abstract
Serious toxicity and death can occur with dichloromethane (DCM) overexposure. The initial coma in acute poisoning is assumed to be caused by the direct anesthetic effect of DCM (Hall and Rumack 1990), but it could also result from the sudden onset of a nonperfusing cardiac arrhythmia as suggested earlier (Aviado and Belej 1974). The purpose of the study was to evaluate the arrhythmogenic properties of DCM exposure. An ischemia-reperfusion model was chosen because DCM was shown to produce a transient decrease of coronary blood flow in dogs (Juhasz-Nagy and Aviado 1977).
