Abstract

hi this talk 1 shall try to give an idea of the activities of the study group on Monte Carlo software which is a pari of the current workshop on physics at LEP. The study of the existing software is not trivial in the sense that the requirements on programs to predict the physics we shall encounter at LEP with high accuracy arc quite stringent: 1 shall argue that a precision of about 0.1% is necessary. Also most of the programs arc in a state of flux: new versions arc brought out regularly, support for some programs ha« stopped, and so on. Therefore, I restrict myself to more global remarks and a few numerical comparisons. I shall start by discussing the accuracy requirements on the Monte Carlo and other software, and the processes for which we have this accuracy in mind. 1 will briefly describe the two types of theoretical input that go into a typical Monte Carlo prorgam to simula te e+e- → μ+μ-. This is followed by a brief discussion of a few technical points which are relevant to an appreciation of the differences between programs. Then I shall describe our results so far on a comparison between various programs. Finally I shall also make some comments on Bhabha scattering.
