Neo-adjuvant Chemotherapy for Osteosarcoma of the Extremities: The Experience at the Rizzoli Institute in 210 Patients Treated with Two Successively Activated Preoperative Protocols Using High-Dose or Moderate-Dose Methotrexate + Cisplatin or High-Dose Methotrexate + Cisplatin + Doxorubicin

Abstract

The prognosis of localized osteosarcoma of the extremities (LOE) treated by surgery alone is very poor. In our experience, in spite of amputation, the disease-free survival rate for these patients is only 10%. This percentage seems unchanged in the last 20 years, at least at the Rizzoli Institute (Table 1).
