Environmental Audits — Marcopper Mining Corp. (The Philippines), Bougainville Copper Mine (Papua New Guinea)

Environments at Risk

Abstract

Like any other usable product, environmental impact assessments need quality controlling, to ensure that product users get their money’s worth. This is a form of auditing: an examination of the environmental records.

“There was an 11-day site visit by two auditors. They had a 3-day and a 1-day visit to the mine, inspecting environmental facilities, assessment procedures and local habitat, impacted and not impacted. The auditors spent the balance of their time in Manila at Head Office retrieving and reviewing documents, inspecting laboratories and environmental consultancies, and interviewing local scientists and government officials.”

“The audit was by a five-man team of experienced environmental consultants. The Chairman was an engineer; and his responsibility was to convert the individual technical audits into a coherent package of recommendations. The others were a geochemist, a biologist, a river engineer and a coastal engineer.”
