Summary

Bone mineral content was measured by dual photon-absorption densitometry (DPA) in 66 patients of either sex (aged 13–58 years) with bronchial asthma being on long-term steroid treatment for at least two years. The results of DPA were correlated with the evaluation of questionnaire covering the main demographic data. Out of all patients 33.3% displayed a diminished bone mass in L2-L3 (female 40.5%; male 20.8%). Excluding female patients in the post-menopause, only 22.7% of the remaining female patients showed a loss in bone density. Since only a minority of patients with chronic asthma being on long-term corticoid treatment develop signs of osteoporosis, the risk patients being prone to a corticoid related bone tissue loss have to be detected. DPA appears to be a very sensitive method for routine screening of asthmatics on corticoids.
