Summary
Tilorone, a drug with immunostimulatory activities, interferes with the lysosomal degradation of sulfated glycosaminoglycans (sGAG) in rats and causes osteopenia reminiscent of that occuring in patients with inherited mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS). While osteopenia in such patients is thought to result from impaired enchondral ossification, in rats it appears to be due to accelerated resorption of the primary spongiosa.
