Summary
The bone density of the proximal (mainly compact substance) and distal (mainly spongy substance) was measured by single-beam photon absorptiometry in 27 women and 11 men suffering from acromegaly. The bone density of the proximal forearm did not differ significantly from a normal collective, but the bone density of the distal forearm was significantly higher than the bone density we found in a normal collective (p < 0.001). The density of the spongy substance of the vertebral column (measurement by guantitative computer tomography) was significantly lower than we expected in a normal collective. We found increased values for the hydroxyproline excreation in urine (parameter of the activity of osteoclasts) and an inverse correlation to osteocalcin (parameter of the activity of osteoblasts.
