Abstract

Koleč, the detached laboratories and experimental animal farm of the Institute for Experimental Biology and Genetics is some 10 miles northwest of Prague. A green graduate in 1968, I spent the very first year of my research apprenticeship there. My task was to produce sera for typing of chicken blood group antigens, which turned out to be the B locus. I recall chasing the birds around their outside runs to be bled, immunised and bled again, through the changing seasons and fortunes of that historic year. I acquired an allergy to the uncooperative dirty beasts but, in compensation, also a lasting appreciation of serology as a tool of genetic analysis.
