1/f Noise in Oscillators: Theoretical and Experimental Progresses

  • Conference paper
Frequency Standards and Metrology

Abstract

Flicker noise or 1/f noise is still being intensively studied in many physical systems and devices, even after almost 60 years of investigations. Its ubiquitous nature is such that it can be observed in resistors, semiconductors, light, biological systems, etc. But its origin is not so well known and its mechanisms are not really understood. Each year brings at least one new theory, sometimes a controversial one. Basic questions (fluctuations of the number of particles, or of a mobility, or of other parameters ?... [1]) remain to be answered but a guide to theoretical interpretation is found in correlations between the noise and some specific parameters of the system, when experimentally observed.
