Abstract

The early literature on the use of X-ray microanalysis in pathology has been reviewed by Roomans (1983) and more recently by Baker et al. (1985) and Roomans (1988). From these reviews it appears that the analysis and identification of exogenous particles, especially in lung, is quantitatively the most important application. Apart from the clinical importance of this field, the relative ease of preparation and analysis of samples for such studies is responsible for this situation. A second group of applications concerns the analysis of pathological local accumulation of metals (copper, iron) in cells. A third group concerns pathological deposits of calcium in cells and tissues, and a fourth group disease-related redistribution of diffusible ions.
