Abstract

There is increased interest in the use of cells which have been isolated from tissues as experimental systems. The advantages of such preparations over the intact tissue have been listed as: ease of manipulation of the experimental environment; unambiguous interpretation of results; ability to study individual cell types; and the opportunity to observe time dependent processes by sampling from the preparation (Dow et al., 1981a; Buja et al., 1985; Lechene, 1986). The study of elemental concentrations in isolated cells should help in gaining an understanding about the role of different elements in the control of cell functions, and about alterations that occur in disease processes.
