Effect of Ebselen (PZ-51) in Liver Failure Induced by Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes)

Summary

Intravenous injection of P. acnes and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) into BALB/c mice resulted in acute liver failure. Treatment with ebselen (PZ-51), a seleno-organic compound, reduced serum GPT activity, and the number and size of necrotic foci of hepatocytes. These activities are suggested to be due to inhibition of leukotriene (LT) formation by ebselen.
