Abstract
The toxicity of selenium was well known long before selenium was established as an essential trace element to man and animals. Especially the central nervous system seems to be sensitive to this toxicity, since neurological symptoms like ataxia, motor incoordination, hyperreflexia, paralysis, depression, anorexia and lack of vitality are outstanding symptoms in animals exposed to toxic amounts of selenium (Moxon 1937).
