Abstract
Brown adipose tissue has long been recognized as an important site of nonshivering thermogenesis in homeotherms (Smith 1961), which must maintain their body temperature within a very narrow range, regardless of the environmental temperature. Probably the best understood is the function of brown adipose tissue in the mammalian neonate, which loses heat at most environmental temperatures far in excess of normal metabolic heat production. The thermal requirements of the newborn exposed for the first time to extrauterine life are mostly covered by heat production in brown adipose tissue, which appears to be the best and preferred way to thermoregulate (Nedergaard et al. 1986). For example, in a newborn rabbit the brown adipose tissue is responsible for more than 60% of increased heat production in the cold (Heim and Hull 1966). In general, after birth brown adipose tissue represents the dominating site of nonshivering thermogenesis, which remains active for several weeks, until other thermoregulatory mechanisms develop (Nedergaard et al. 1986).
