Abstract
The artificial heart has stirred considerable interest and controversy in the lay and medical press. The controversy arising from stroke complications and quality of life issues has stalled efforts to implant the device permanently. The clinical indications for the artificial heart are now largely limited to “bridge to transplantation.”
