Abstract

MR examination was performed in 16 patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis and with progressive low back pain. In all, the shapes of the intervertebral foramina were altered due to vertebral displacement and to posteriorly and laterally extending disc protrusion. In addition, the MR findings permitted separation into three groups: (1) normal fat in the intervertebral foramina, nerve roots of normal shape; (2) reduced fat, compressed nerve roots; (3) no remaining fat, nerve roots not identifiable.
