Summary
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of nickel allergy and ear piercing in young men. The study was performed on young men enlisted for military service, with 216 18-year-old subjects being examined. Case history was taken by means of a questionnaire. Patch tests with nickel sulphate and cobalt chloride were made. Ear piercing was found to be quite common (22%). In spite of this, the prevalence of nickel allergy in these men was found to be much lower than that known in women. This also applies to the persons with pierced ears.
