Zusammenfassung

Die 80er Jahre, so viel läßt sich heute schon mit Sicherheit sagen, haben Bewegung in die Beschäftigungstheorie gebracht. Die Fakten sind zur Genüge bekannt: Stagnation der Beschäftigung in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und anderen Kernländern Europas trotz anhaltendem Konjunkturaufschwung, trotz hoher Kapazitätsauslastung, trotz gemäßigter Lohnpolitik, trotz sinkender Lohnquote und steigender Kapitalrentabilität, trotz weiter steigendem Arbeitskräftepotential; gleichzeitig rasante Beschäftigungsexpansion in den Vereinigten Staaten und niedrige Arbeitslosenquoten in Japan sowie in verschiedenen kleineren europäischen Ländern. Die Erklärung der einzelnen nationalen Entwicklungen im Zeitablauf wie auch der Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede im internationalen Quervergleich stellt die theoretische und empirische Beschäftigungsforschung vor die größte Herausforderung seit Keynes.
