Hepatic Transport of Organic Substances

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

ATP is a major high energy phosphate-containing compound which is critical in metabolism and energy-dependent transport. In recent years, ATP has been recognized as a putative neurotransmitter and there has been a surge of interest in the presence and function of extracellular ATP. ATP has traditionally been considered solely as an intracellular constituent. However, the development of sensitive methods for measurement of ATP, detection of ATP “receptors” on the plasma membrane of many cell types, and description of cellular effects of ATP have renewed interest in extracellular ATP (Cornwell et al., 1986b; Daly, 1983).
