Abstract

Blood plasma or serum is a complex mixture of more than 100 compounds (proteins, fats, low molecular weight compounds, ions,...). It functions primarily as a transport medium that conveys nutrients to cells, removes their metabolites, and carries hormones to their specific site of action. In addition plasma is involved in the regulation of physiological processes. Its composition and volume influences the activities of other organ-systems which, in turn, maintain the homeostasis of the entire organism (Versieck and Cornells, 1989). Serum differs from plasma chiefly in that it contains no fibrinogen, which, due to polymerization, forms the blood clot. To obtain plasma an anticoagualant is added to the blood.
