The Bundeskriminalamt: The German Federal Criminal Police Office

  • Conference paper

Abstract

The 11 states (resp. 16 states since Oct. 3, 1990) of the Federal Republic of Germany are responsible for policing within their own area. This sovereignity of the states in police matters has its legal anchoring in Article 30 of the federal German Basic Law of May 23, 1949. Correspondingly, there are 11 different state police acts, which resemble each other in many key points. Nonetheless, the individual state police forces differ considerably in terms of their organizational structure.
