Summary

Into each of the four categories of depressives (bipolar, monopolar, neurotic, unclassified) at least 15 individuals were selected at random from a larger group of clearly diagnosed patients. Based on interview data the subdivided as well as the combined sample was compared to a non psychiatric control group of 26 women and 10 men in terms of personality traits and experiences during childhood and adolescence. All four groups of depressives showed differences of childhood personality traits and experiences compared to the normal control group. A slight exception was evident in the group of bipolar depressives in that they resembled normal personality traits. Our data from childhood and adolescence were compared with equivalent data reported in the literature focussing on adulthood. Personality traits were found to be similar in support of the hypothesis of continuity and the linear correlation of childhood and adult personalities.
