Abstract

Several xenobiotics are excreted renally as mercapturic acids or cysteine conjugates. On the one hand, this pathway leads to the loss of only minor amounts of physiological substrates, on the other hand, most agents excreted in this way are electrophilic compounds which often possess cancerogenic and/or mutagenic activities. Estimation of excreted mercapturic acid might reflect the extent of exposure towards such xenobiotics. In this respect, urinary analysis of thiol groups after alkaline hydrolysis of these conjugates was suggested as a parameter of biological monitoring (Seutter-Berlage et al 1977).
