Abstract

Ultrasonography has earned an established place in the evaluation and management of female infertility. The history of this application began when Kratochwil et al. (1972, 1973) first evaluated the ovaries with ultrasound. Later, improvements in image resolution enabled the sonographic detection of cyclic changes in the female genital organs. Building on the work of Kratochwil, Hackelöer and Hansmann were able in 1976 to demonstrate follicular growth and involution with ultrasound and to show a strong correlation between follicular size and endocrine parameters (Hackelöer et al. 1979).
