Zusammenfassung

AIDS ist die englische Abkürzung für erworbenes Immundefektsyndrom. Innerhalb weniger Jahre nach sprunghaftem Anstieg der Zahl der an diesem Syndrom Erkrankten konnte seine virale Ätiologie nahezu vollkommen aufgeklärt werden. AIDS ist nicht gleichbedeutend mit HIV-Infektion. Ein Defekt im Immunsystem nach Infektion mit dem Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) entwickelt sich nicht sofort. Mit zunehmender Beobachtungsdauer steigt jedoch die Rate der klinischen Manifestation dieser Infektion als Immundefekt (1, 11). Ob und nach welcher Zeit ein Plateau in dieser Manifestationsrate unter der 100-%-Marke erreicht wird, ist offen. Vor Ablauf der nächsten zehn Jahre läßt sich diese Frage nicht beantworten.
