Zusammenfassung
Die Entwicklung der ethischen Diskussion zu Fragen der Gentherapie am Menschen kann als ein Bilderbuchbeispiel für einen verantwortlichen und gelungenen Vorlauf ethischer Argumentation und Güterabwägung vor den technischen Ermöglichungen von Gentherapie oder anderen Formen gezielter und präziser Manipulation menschlicher genetischer Informationen dienen. Im Gegensatz etwa zur Nukleartechnologie, bei der in den westlichen Industrienationen die ethische und soziale Akzeptanzdiskussion weitgehend im Nachlauf zur technischen Einführung erfolgte, und zwar mit erheblichen ethischen und ökonomischen Kosten, hat es seit der Konferenz von Asilomar im Jahre 1975 [16] eine ausführliche internationale ethische Diskussion unter den beteiligten Wissenschaftlern gegeben. Diese Diskussion betraf vor allem 2 Fragenkomplexe: die ethischen Aspekte der Sicherheit der neuen Technik und die ethischen Aspekte der Grenzen menschlichen Manipulationshandelns.
