Abstract
In the course of studies on the reporting of malaria imported into European countries, we made inquiries of the regimes of malaria prophylaxis recommended for use by each country, or the practice generally followed for travellers from that country to malarious areas. For simplicity of presentation we have considered three categories of advice: chemoprophylaxis for areas where malaria is prevalent but Plasmodium falciparum is sensitive to chloroquine; chemoprophylaxis for areas with chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum; and for countries which recommend the carriage of an antimalarial for self-treatment in difficult circumstances and where chloroquine resistance occurs, the drug recommended to be carried.
