Abstract
Only surgical therapy can influence decisively the course of a solid malignant tumor of the gastrointestinal tract and cure the patient. Today, the results of standard operative procedures have reached an extremely high standard that will hardly be surpassed even in the future. However, only little improvement has been achieved with regard to cure rates, because more than half of the patients admitted for surgery present with an advanced stage of systemic disease, rendering curative surgery impossible.
