The Signs and Causes of Hydrops of the Uterus

  • François Du Port

Heavily burdened is the womb affected by the hydrops: nor does the finger encounter firm resistance as with the wind, but fluctuant surge and subsidence, and the swelling is soft to the touch. Like the ascites, the cause is a disorder of the spleen or liver which, by hidden pathways, causes much fluid to gather in the womb. The menses are long suppressed, and all their ichor oppresses and distends the uterine cavity and gradually fills up the belly with stagnant fluid.
