Mathematical Modelling of Mud Transport in Estuaries

  • Conference paper
Physical Processes in Estuaries

Abstract

This chapter reviews the development of mathematical models of mud transport in estuaries during the past 15 years. The basic assumptions inherent in such models are discussed, and the existing methods of modelling settling, vertical turbulent exchange, deposition, fluid mud, formation of a mud deposit and erosion are described. The review refers almost exclusively to modelling methods used at Hydraulics Research, Wallingford, England. Several recent applications of one-and two-dimensional (in-depth) models to simulate mud transport phenomena in whole estuaries are also described.
