Immunosuppressive Treatment in Myocarditis

New Concepts in Viral Heart Disease

Abstract

“Myocarditis” is defined “as a process characterized by an inflammatory infiltrate of the myocardium with necrosis and/or degeneration of adjacent myocytes not typical of the ischemic damage associated with coronary artery disease” [1]. A viral etiology is generally suspected in most cases observed in the western hemisphere, but it is very difficult to prove a viral pathogenesis in human myocarditis. The disease is, therefore, very often referred to as “idiopathic myocarditis.”
