Abstract
Today’s database systems are well-proved for business and administrative applications. They are less suited for non standard applications like VLSI-CAD because of their limited data models which are tailored to simple object structures. Thus, the complexity of CAD objects can only be represented indirectly. Modelling of VLSI-CAD data requires at least five basic structuring mechanisms: complexity, composition, versioning, representations and abstractions. From this point of view the paper outlines three exemplary VLSI data models. Afterwards it introduces the framework of an object-oriented data model offering all basic structuring mechanisms in an integrated way.
