Abstract

Since 1971, it has been well documented that chromosomal changes appear specific to certain types of leukemias (Sandberg 1980). More recent efforts to yield higher resolution banding (Yunis et al. 1981) have further suggested that these anomalies are not randomly distributed throughout the karyotype but affect a restricted number of breakpoints (Mitelman 1985). Apparently similar leukemias are associated with different karyotype profiles and also reveal discordant survivals and responses to treatment (Berger et al. 1987). This is the reason why, in the 1970s, cytogenetics gained a prominent role in the diagnosis and prognosis of leukemias and lymphomas (Third International Workshop on Chromosomes in Leukemia (1980) 1981; Fourth International Workshop on Chromosomes in Leukemia (1982) 1984). Their classification is now based on cytochemical morpholology, immunolabeling, and cytogenetics (the so-called MIC classification).
